Supply Chain and Planning in Dynamics 365 Business Central
Optimize your supply chain with AI-driven demand forecasting, automated replenishment planning, and material requirements planning that connects purchasing, production, and inventory.
Intelligent Supply Chain Planning, Forecasting, and Replenishment
Supply chain planning in Dynamics 365 Business Central connects the demand side of your business (sales orders, forecasts, production needs) with the supply side (purchase orders, production orders, transfer orders) through an intelligent planning engine. Instead of relying on your purchasing team to manually check stock levels and place orders when they notice items are running low, Business Central’s planning system calculates what you need, when you need it, and from which source (vendor, production, or transfer).
For many mid-market organizations, the shift from reactive purchasing to planned replenishment is one of the highestimpact changes Business Central enables. The result is fewer stockouts, lower carrying costs, better vendor lead time compliance, and procurement teams that spend their time on strategic sourcing rather than emergency ordering.
Supply Chain Planning and Optimization Components in Dynamics 365 Business Central
The following supply chain and planning components come with Dynamics 365 Business Central:

Demand Forecasting
Create demand forecasts based on historical sales data, seasonal patterns, and market projections. Business Central supports item-level and location-level forecasts that feed directly into the planning engine. Forecasts can be created manually by your sales or planning team, or generated using AI-powered time series analysis that detects trends, seasonality, and demand patterns automatically.
The 2026 release wave adds event and promotion forecasting, allowing you to model the demand impact of planned marketing campaigns, seasonal events, and promotional pricing. This capability helps organizations that experience demand spikes around specific events to plan inventory and purchasing more accurately.

Replenishment Planning
Business Central’s requisition worksheet calculates replenishment needs based on current inventory, incoming supply (open purchase and production orders), committed demand (sales orders, production components), forecast demand, and safety stock and reorder point parameters. The planning run generates suggested purchase orders, production orders, and transfer orders that your planning team reviews and converts to actual orders.
Reorder policies can be configured at the item and location level. Choose from fixed reorder quantity, maximum quantity, order-for-order, or lot-for-lot policies depending on the characteristics of each item. High-value items might use order-fororder to minimize inventory investment, while commodity items might use maximum quantity to optimize ordering and handling costs.

MRP and MPS (Basic vs Manufacturing-Enhanced)
Material Requirements Planning (MRP) and Master Production Scheduling (MPS) in Business Central connect demand across sales, production, and service into a single planning calculation. MPS focuses on finished goods planning based on sales forecasts and customer orders, while MRP explodes bills of materials to calculate component and raw material requirements.
Business Central offers two levels of planning capability depending on your license:
Basic Planning (Essentials)
⊚ Handles purchased items and assembly BOMs
⊚ Generates purchase order suggestions based on demand, reorder points, and safety stock
⊚ Considers vendor lead times and lot-sizing rules
⊚ Supports transfer order suggestions between locations
⊚ Action messages tell your team what to order, reschedule, or cancel
Manufacturing-Enhanced Planning (Premium)
⊚ Everything in Basic Planning, plus full production order generation
⊚ Multi-level BOM explosion calculates raw material needs from finished goods demand
⊚ Routing-based capacity planning accounts for work center and machine center availability
⊚ Finite and infinite scheduling options for production order start and end dates
⊚ Subcontracting planning for operations performed by external vendors
⊚ Integrated planning across purchase, production, transfer, and assembly orders in a single calculation
