Slow Performance Fix When Closing Microsoft Dynamics GP on Windows 10

When you upgrade to a new operating system, you will often experience hiccups in the performance of your existing applications, at least early after the upgrade. Such has been the case for some users of Microsoft Dynamics GP after upgrading to Windows 10, Microsoft’s latest operating system. Mariano Gomez addresses one of these issues on his blog: slow performance when exiting Microsoft Dynamics GP on Windows 10. In the article, he summarizes the problem and provides a quick fix.

After upgrading to Windows 10, some people have experienced a slowdown when closing Microsoft Dynamics GP, and Gomez quotes a Microsoft support engineer acknowledging the issue. It is as though the application were moving through tree sap. Luckily, the problem isn’t tree sap, as cleaning that out of workstations would no doubt be a difficult process.

Gomez says that a potential way to “bypass the slow application closing is to change or add the following Dex.ini setting to see if it resolves the issue on exit. The setting changes a Microsoft Dynamics GP global variable and avoids the pause that seems to be occurring during the exiting process.

OLEClose=FALSE

Gomez says that this setting controls whether the Microsoft Dynamics GP application checks for the OLE Container application being opened at the time of shutdown. If the Container is open during the shutdown process, Microsoft Dynamics GP will attempt to close it. The default value for this setting is TRUE, so that Microsoft Dynamics GP always tries to close the Container if it is open. Gomez warns that you should only apply this change if you are experiencing this issue.
