Most organizations that deploy Microsoft Dynamics GP leave the customization of their new solution to the partner/reseller that is handling their deployment. But with a bit of tech know-how, you can make many customizations yourself with the Modifier with Visual Basic for Applications (VBA). This module comes with the Starter Pack edition of Microsoft Dynamics GP, and it enables you to modify the appearance and functionality of any Microsoft Dynamics GP window or Dexterity-based third-party window, add new fields, change global resources to affect the entire application, and attach VBA code for less complex business logic.
The Modifier is a tool for simple customizations, especially to make visual changes to Microsoft Dynamics GP windows. For example, you can move fields around or remove unused fields entirely. VBA can be used with the Modifier to add to existing Microsoft Dynamics GP logic, or in some cases to stop that logic from occurring, such as when a user clicks a button in a GP window.
To use the tool, you simply open the window in Microsoft Dynamics GP that you want to modify, and go to Tools > Customize > Modify Current Window. Here is where you can customize the window, such as modifying, adding, or removing fields. Add the modified window to the VBA Editor (Tools > Customize > Add Current Window to Visual Basic), as well as the fields (Tools > Customize > Add Fields to Visual Basic). In the VBA Editor, you can write the code for your custom fields.
Note that Modifier/VBA customizations can present problems when you upgrade, or even for the odd system update.
Of course, if you’re uncomfortable building your own window customizations, MIG & Co. will be happy to painlessly tailor Microsoft Dynamics GP to your way of doing business for you.
